Emerald – Birthstone for May

Emerald – Birthstone for May

Emerald

The birthstone for May and gemstone of the 55th wedding anniversary.  Emeralds are one of the gemstones associated with the Zodiac star sign Cancer.  Emerald’s lush green colour has soothed souls and excited imaginations since antiquity. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.”

Emeralds were mainly mined in in antiquity in Egypt and were said to be one of Egyptian queen Cleopatra’s favourite gems,  Emeralds are found in many countries around the world.  Colombia is the world’s largest producer of emeralds, constituting 50–95% of the world production. Zambia is the world’s second biggest producer.  The assessment of Emeralds is carried out using the four Cs – colour, clarity cut and carat weight

Some stunningly beautiful Emerald pieces are held in the Royal Collection namely the Grand Duchess Vladimir Emerald Tiara and The Dehli Durbar Emerald Necklace.
